Stroke is
considered as the second leading cause of death in the world after heart
related disease and a leading cause of disability. In nationwide studies,
researchers conclusively stated that more young people are suffering from
strokes, stroke related illnesses and disabilities.
Unlike in the
past, the studies reveal that more cases of strokes are reported among people
aged between 20-64 years. In an even more alarming statement, researchers claim
that if no effective measures are put in place soon, the number of stroke cases
among the young generation could double by the year 2030.
Here is what young
people need to know about strokes:
·
There are two types of
strokes; Ischaemic strokes which are
caused by the blockage of blood supply to the brain and haemorrhagic strokes
which are caused by the rapture of a weak blood vessel.
·
The main risk factors
of stroke occurrences include;
-
Unhealthy diet
-
Sedentary lifestyles
-
High blood pressure
-
Obesity
-
Smoking
-
Alcohol
-
Lack of physical
exercise
·
Currently 31% of stroke
cases constituents of young people aged between 20-64 years. This marks the 25%
increase in the occurrence rate of strokes among young people since 1990
according to studies shown in The Lancet Medical Journal.
·
In order to avoid
strokes, young people should move away from consumption of unhealthy foods such
as fats and the abuse of drugs which dramatically increase the occurrence of
strokes and can lead to premature deaths and disabilities.
