Increased stroke incidents among young people: What you should know


Stroke is considered as the second leading cause of death in the world after heart related disease and a leading cause of disability. In nationwide studies, researchers conclusively stated that more young people are suffering from strokes, stroke related illnesses and disabilities.
Unlike in the past, the studies reveal that more cases of strokes are reported among people aged between 20-64 years. In an even more alarming statement, researchers claim that if no effective measures are put in place soon, the number of stroke cases among the young generation could double by the year 2030. 

Here is what young people need to know about strokes:
·         There are two types of strokes; Ischaemic strokes which are caused by the blockage of blood supply to the brain and haemorrhagic strokes which are caused by the rapture of a weak blood vessel.

·         The main risk factors of stroke occurrences include;
-          Unhealthy diet
-          Sedentary lifestyles
-          High blood pressure
-          Obesity
-          Smoking
-          Alcohol
-          Lack of physical exercise

·         Currently 31% of stroke cases constituents of young people aged between 20-64 years. This marks the 25% increase in the occurrence rate of strokes among young people since 1990 according to studies shown in The Lancet Medical Journal.

·         In order to avoid strokes, young people should move away from consumption of unhealthy foods such as fats and the abuse of drugs which dramatically increase the occurrence of strokes and can lead to premature deaths and disabilities.
