This week wasn’t a good
start for the bosses of mobile service providers in Kenya. It all started on Monday
night when the Telkom Kenya’s CEO, Mickael
Ghossein, was escorted by
police officers to Kilimani CID offices for grilling over unregistered Sim cards.
Tuesday morning was Safaricom’s Bob Collymore and Airtel's Shivan Bhargava fateful day to face the law.
Collymore was being grilled at CID headquarters whereas the Airtel boss
appeared before the Industrial police station for questioning.
The grilling was intrigued by the directive given by the Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo, ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i
and the CCK Director General Francis Wangusi. The four mobile network operators
are to face charges for allowing unregistered subscribers into their
network and furthermore selling pre-activated Sim
cards, contrary to the prior government directive that all individuals must
register as subscribers of their preferred mobile network (s).
The crackdown comes barely two weeks after the Westgate mall siege
that left 73 dead, 240 injured
and 39 still missing.
